Lightweight Glass - A New Design Philosophy

The glass industry is evolving and so are we. At BLUEGLASS., we are rethinking premium packaging through lightweight design, without compromising on quality or character.

For decades, premium spirits have been defined by the weight of their bottles. Heavy glass conveyed quality, tradition, and exclusivity - a physical expression of craftsmanship that consumers could feel in their hands.

However, times have changed. As environmental priorities reshape global industry standards, the spirits sector is entering a new era, one in which sustainability outweighs mass. At the forefront of this transformation stands a new design philosophy: lightweight glass.

A Market Turning Point

Rising costs for energy, raw materials, and transportation have made heavy packaging increasingly impractical. Leading this policy shift, Sweden’s state-owned alcohol retailer Systembolaget has introduced a new product category that encourages producers to adopt bottles weighing 400 grams or less for 700ML formats.

This initiative is already driving industry-wide change, challenging producers to redefine what constitutes “premium” in a more sustainable world.

Rethinking Glass at BLUEGLASS.

At BLUEGLASS., we view weight reduction as one important part of a much broader sustainability mission. Our comprehensive approach to glass packaging includes:

  • Prioritising local and energy-efficient manufacturing
  • Maximising the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass
  • Evaluating transportation impact and overall supply chain emissions
  • Supporting socially responsible production practices and reducing overpacking

Sustainability is not a checkbox - it is a carefully considered system of interconnected decisions. Increasingly, it is also becoming a fundamental design philosophy.

Meet the FeatherWeight Series

We are proud to unveil a new series of lightweight bottles: our FeatherWeight Series, part of our Bespoke by BLUEGLASS. family.

Inspired by classic silhouettes and reimagined for today’s market, these bottles have been carefully designed to reduce weight without compromising on elegance, performance, or shelf presence.

Each bottle in the series reflects our commitment to sustainability, combining refined aesthetics with a significantly lighter footprint, offering a new standard for modern spirits packaging.

What Lies Ahead: From PCR to Hydrogen Furnaces

While many manufacturers highlight the use of 15 to 20 percent recycled glass, we encourage our partners to look deeper. Factors such as energy sources, furnace efficiency, and quality control rejection rates are equally important in determining a bottle’s environmental impact.

We are also proud to support next-generation sustainability innovation. Our manufacturing partners have been selected to participate in H2GLASS, Horizon 22, an EU-funded initiative exploring the use of hydrogen-powered glass furnaces as a cleaner alternative to natural gas. The promise is significant, though its long-term success will depend on the scalability and environmental footprint of hydrogen production itself.

A Note for Craft Producers:

Lighter bottles (particularly in larger formats) often require press-and-blow technology, which is typically associated with larger-scale equipment and higher minimum order quantities. This presents a challenge for many smaller producers, who risk becoming dependent on industrial suppliers and compromising their brand autonomy.

We remain committed to offering flexible, scalable solutions that meet sustainability goals while protecting the unique identity of craft producers.

Let Us Redefine Premium

At BLUEGLASS., we are helping shape the future of glass packaging: lighter, smarter, and more responsible. And we are doing so without sacrificing the artistry, quality, or individuality that define exceptional spirit brands.
