INTRODUCING BB JORDEN:
A Lightweight Bottle
In the ever-evolving world of spirit bottle packaging, a significant shift has occurred over the past two decades. Heavy spirit bottles, designed to exude a premium feel, once dominated the market. Their weight and quality were reflected in their higher unit prices. At that time, when the cost of energy, raw materials, and transport was more affordable, this approach seemed ideal.
However, today we are witnessing a dramatic reversal of this trend. For example, Systembolaget, the Swedish monopoly for retailing alcoholic beverages, has taken a bold stance. It is urging its suppliers to reduce or limit the weight of glass bottles within reasonable bounds for the sake of sustainability. Furthermore, Systembolaget is introducing a special category for lighter bottles. This encourages beverage companies to adapt their products to meet these new standards, aiming for a target weight of 400 grams or less for a 700ML format.
The Question Arises: Is a Lighter Bottle Truly Better?
In short, the answer is yes. However, at BLUEGLASS., we adopt a more comprehensive approach to the glass packaging conundrum. While reducing weight is a vital aspect of our design philosophy, it is not the sole criterion guiding our innovation. We consider where a bottle is produced, the energy used, the raw materials, the percentage of post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass, and other sustainability factors. Our commitment extends to areas beyond production, such as social responsibility, work environments, and ensuring that our bottles are not “overpacked.”
At BLUEGLASS., we acknowledge the need for new, original bottles designed with both light weight and sustainability in mind. Today, we are thrilled to unveil new additions to our Bespoke by BLUEGLASS. product line, starting with the BB JORDEN.
While many manufacturers commit to using 15 to 20% recycled glass, we encourage you to consider more than just this percentage. Beyond the amount of recycled content, you should contemplate the type of energy used, the level of quality control rejection, and the furnace’s efficiency when evaluating the eco-friendliness of a glass bottle.
The European Union has launched an exciting study called H2GLASS-Horizon 22, and we are proud to share that our manufacturing partners have been selected to experiment with hydrogen as a replacement for natural gas. This development is indeed promising, but it raises questions about the sustainability of hydrogen production and the associated costs.
Introducing the 700ML BB JORDEN
The BB JORDEN is one of the latest additions to the Bespoke by BLUEGLASS. line. A lightweight reimagining of the classic stubby design, BB JORDEN weighs in at just 420 grams—nearly half the weight of a traditional bottle. This new product is now available for orders in a 700ML format, and a 500ML version will be introduced in 2024. It will feature either a GPI 28-400 or a bartop finish. How can we help you?
Finally, we want to highlight a potential challenge faced by craft distillers and brewers. Lighter weight bottles in larger formats often necessitate press and blow technology, typically associated with larger machines and higher minimum order quantities. This could potentially put smaller producers at risk of becoming codependent on larger suppliers, potentially sacrificing their carefully crafted brand identities in the name of sustainability.
At BLUEGLASS., we are committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable packaging while keeping our community informed about the latest developments in the industry. Together, we can navigate the complex landscape of spirit bottle sustainability.
Stay tuned for more updates and innovations in the world of eco-conscious spirit packaging.
